Frequently Asked Questions

What is the AMA?
The CSU Chico Collegiate Chapter of the American Marketing Association is one of the biggest business organizations on campus.  It is dedicated to really making its members stand out by providing many opportunities for them to grow professionally by gaining hands-on experience.  The business world is extremely competitive, and a college degree does not make a student stand out the way it used to.  The AMA strives to add value to its members by providing many different ways for students to get involved. Aside from weekly meetings that vary in substance from workshops and barbeques to guest speakers, the AMA also has many events, mixers, committees, and volunteer opportunities to help its members network and grow professionally.

Another important focus of the AMA is building relationships.  Not only is joining the AMA a great way to meet fellow motivated students, but it is also a great way to interact with companies.  The AMA host's mixers and dinners to provide students and businesses with intimate environments to mingle and network.  AMA also partners with local businesses to create marketing plans by conducting research and holding focus groups.  The bonds between AMA members are also strong as they all have a common goal, to enhance their personal brand and have fun doing it!  And at the end of the year, a few members who are very active will be invited to join the AMA board at the national AMA conference in New Orleans.

Overall, the Chico AMA focuses on building strong relationships and developing its members professionally.  It is devoted to serving students, CSU Chico, and community organizations on a local and national level.

How do I join the American Marketing Association?
To join the AMA, you must fill out an application form and submit your payment with the application by the semester deadline.

Do I have to be a business major to join the AMA?
Anybody can join the AMA no matter what their major is in college.  We encourage a wide variety of majors and our organization includes many members who are neither marketing or business majors.  The AMA can give great experience to everyone, and we encourage professional development across the entire campus.

How much are dues to join the AMA?
There are two dues that must be paid to join the AMA.  One due is the national chapter fees that go to the corporate American Marketing Association - $42.00.  The other fee is our local chapter fee which covers the cost of food for meetings, printing promotional material, and costs for student events - $30.00.
Total cost is $72.00.  National dues are good for an entire year, and chapter dues are due each semester.

When and where does the AMA meet?
In the Fall of 2008, we meet in Glenn Hall (Room # TBD) at 6:30pm

What does the AMA do for students?
The AMA is focused on helping students develop professionally.  This includes proving resume workshops, interviewing workshops, and a wide variety of guest speakers.  In addition to all this, career and internship opportunities are provided through our many corporate networks and students get to work one-on-one with recruiters.

Who can be a project leader?
Anybody with an interest in taking a leadership role can fill a project leader position.  We encourage students to sign up for project leaders to help them increase their professional skills and gain experience in working with a team outside of the classroom.  If you're interested, let someone on the board of directors know or email us.

How do I get involved in a project?
Simply attend our meetings and learn about what projects we have available and sign up there.  If you are unable to attend our meetings, stop by our office hours or email us to find out what projects we have and which one(s) you'd be interested in joining.  You can also visit our Current Projects page to get a sense for what's going on.
